Dennis, I don't beleive the check engine light has any way to be turned on from anything in the hydraulic system. I think you have another issue going on.
I'd start with inspecting the linkage. This might be helpful. I have seen some issues with the pedal damper (#33)
I'm pretty sure the side cover needs to come off to acess the snap ring that's on the back side of the axleby the gear. Then the axle will pull out and alow you to replace the seal.
@Lonnie On that I'd lean towards something electrical, like a chafed wire or something. If it was a bad sender I'd expect it to be a constant.
You pull the side cover (number 1 / 2 ) The whole Axel assembly will come out with the cover and you will be able to access the nut.
From what youre describing, I'd expect it to be the Fuel sending unit. Either it's hanging up and not droping past a certin level, or it's something on the electrical output side of things. (...
