Fuel gauge never goes below half tank

  • Ever since I bought this 1640 HST, the gas guage never goes below half a tank.  We sent it to service twice, they would send it back saying they couldnt find anything wrong even though the tank obviosuly never tells you if its empty.  It will go to a full tank fine but as soon as it hits half, it stays there until filled again.  Any obvious  parts I can swap out to fix this?  I assume its a fuel bobber of some kind I have to replace.  Thanks

  • From what youre describing, I'd expect it to be the Fuel sending unit.  Either it's hanging up and not droping past a certin level, or it's something on the electrical output side of things. (on the electrical side there should be power in and then low voltage power out, which will swing between like 1volts-5volts in order to tell the gauge where to position to. If you do decide that you need to replace the sending unit please report back and let us know if that was the issue.

  • Thanks I might try it, another thing it does is that sometimes the high temp gauge goes full and flashes even though nothings really overheating.  Does that sound related at all to the electrical or sending unit?

  • @Lonnie  On that I'd lean towards something electrical, like a chafed wire or something. If it was a bad sender I'd expect it to be a constant.
